It is amusing to us photographers to rind out that even Reynolds did not always please his sitter. He at times met with the same dissatisfaction some of us encounter for.being a little too honest in the treatment of our model. Romney had a better eye to business. He invariably flattered somewhat, but he missed what Reynolds achieved--lasting reputation for truth. Perhaps the best known work of Reynolds is the "Age of Innocence," and no wonder photographers delight in its imitation. We here reproduce the original picture by Reynolds and a fac-simile made by the Heyn Studio. The photographer certainly has followed closely the original, and it demonstrates the truth of what we said about Reynolds as an educator of the pictorial photographer. Let us use this little picture to convey some of the lessons it contains. First, note the masterly way in which the painter balances his areas of light and shade, and how he contrasts the lines of the composition, how he suppressed unessential detail and gets emphasis and expres The Heyn Studio Omaha, Nebr. sion where they are needed. How skillfully is the figure spaced--the head of the little model is just at the right height above the centre of the picture and is kept in good relation with the space back of it.
